When it comes to building a privacy fence, there are a myriad of styles to choose from, however the most important choice is material: vinyl or wood. Both materials provide plenty of privacy, however there are pros and cons to using either material.

Vinyl Fence Advantages

Vinyl fencing provides a very durable and long lasting privacy fence. It resists weathering, rot, temperature extremes and damage much better than wood. Cleaning is easy and it never needs painted, making it perfect for those who don’t want to be bothered with regular maintenance. Vinyl is lighter weight than wood, so it’s easy to handle and install and it comes in a wide variety of colors, finishes, and styles making it very versatile.

Vinyl fencing is expensive. It costs significantly more than wood, at least initially. The lack of maintenance costs means that there is a breakeven point down the line, though it takes some time to get there. Vinyl is not biodegradable, so, even though it’s recyclable, it’s not as eco-friendly as wood.

Wood Fence Advantages

Wood provides homeowners with a more natural look that can better blend in with existing outdoor features such as wood siding and the general landscape overall. Wood fencing is considerably less expensive than vinyl and it significantly easier to cut for those looking for custom fencing options. Wood is also both recyclable and biodegradable, so it’s the perfect choice for those who have concerns about the environment.

Wood can be somewhat difficult to work with due to its weight. And it requires much more maintenance than vinyl in order to keep it looking great for a very long time. Waterproofing or painting are required periodically in order to prevent the breakdown of the wood fibers due to the natural degradation process and there are no warranties offered on wood fencing products like there are for vinyl.
